Sports Physiotherapy

Sports physiotherapy is a specialised branch of physiotherapy focusing on the prevention, diagnosis, treatment, & rehabilitation of injuries related to sports & exercise. It aims to enhance performance, expedite recovery, & reduce the risk of future injuries through tailored interventions, including exercises, manual therapy, & advice on injury prevention.

Through working in rugby for over 12 years, treating national & elite level multisport athletes, & being an athlete myself I have a unique set of specialist skills tailored to the needs of athletes & active individuals.  I have further training in biomechanics of running & bike fitting, & exercise physiology.  I have a keen interest in different training methods & understand the importance of being aware of sport-specific demands to be able to design programs that reduce the risk of injury.  It is essential to be able to develop customised rehabilitation programs to ensure a safe & timely return to sport.  As a sports physiotherapist I work with the athlete as well as coaching team, focusing on restoring strength, flexibility, & proprioception.  It is also necessary to appreciate the importance of the psychological impact of injury whether working with a career athlete or active individual training for their own personal goal.

Scar Therapy

LymphaTouch

Scars are part of our story, love them or hate them. By definition they are not the same as the
original tissue.  But whether you want to hide them or show them off there are things you can
do to to help your scar to be as 'healthy' as possible. Different treatment options are available
depending on the type, location & age of the scar.

I first learnt the importance of good scar management when I worked in the NHS in a Hand
Therapy department. Working with such intricate joints & tissues it's essential to minimise the effects of scar tissue to optimise the outcomes of healing. But why should that be any less obvious a priority for another joint, such as a knee, or wound after cancer surgery, or episiotomy?  Even older scars have the potential to cause pain & dysfunction, whether they're a 5mm keyhole incision, C-section or mastectomy.

The 'RESTORE' Scar Therapy Method is a non-invasive physical therapy method developed to treat scar tissue, fibrosis & adhesions. Using specialist scar massage & fascial release, therapy tools & self-care advice to promote healthy recovery.
How can scar therapy help?
- Stimulate change to scar tissue on the skin surface, & to adhesions or fibrosis in the
underlying tissue
- Reduce common symptoms, such as pain & sensitivity
- Promote functional & cosmetic improvements after surgery

The RESTORE method has been developed by UK's leading scar therapy teacher & Harley Street scar specialist, Emma Holly. RESTORE scar therapy method is used within NHS & by leading private healthcare providers. A course of treatment is usually recommended, but a single session & self-care advice for you to follow at home can be helpful.

LymphaTouch is a medical device which produces a negative pressure, or vacuum, & mechanical vibration on the skin to stimulate

lymphatic drainage and treat scars. Controlling the negative pressure allows us to work with your body to help remove excess

fluid from the tissues, and improve healing and overall health and well-being.

LymphaTouch is indicated for the treatment of:

  • pre and post operative swelling

  • scars

  • lymphedema

  • acute injuries

  • fascial restrictions

  • muscle recovery treatments

  • pain management

  • joint function

Acupuncture is one of the many skills used within physiotherapy as an integrated approach to the management of pain & inflammation & as a means of stimulating the body’s own healing chemicals in order to aid recovery & enhance rehabilitation.

Acupuncture involves the use of single use, pre-sterilised, disposable needles of varying widths, lengths & materials that pierce the skin at the Acupuncture points. The Physiotherapist will determine the locations of the Acupuncture points, based upon the assessment of the cause of the imbalance. A number of needles may be used at each treatment and these are typically left in position for some 20-30 minutes before being removed.

Trigger point Acupuncture may also be used to facilitate relaxation in specific muscles following trauma such as whiplash injury; for longer term unresolving muscle pain such as repetitive strain injury (RSI) or as a means to obtain increased muscle length in order to aid stretch & rehabilitation such as sports injuries . Here the needle is placed into the affected muscle until it is felt to relax under the needle & then removed. Trigger point needling is often much quicker & therefore does not require the 20-30 minute treatment time. (Acupuncture Association of Chartered Physiotherapists)

Lymphatic Drainage (LD)

Lymphatic drainage (LD) is an advanced therapy in which the practitioner uses a range of specialised & gentle rhythmic pumping techniques to move the skin in the direction of the lymph flow. This stimulates the lymphatic vessels that carry substances vital to the defence of the body as well as help in the removal of waste products.

LD may be used for:

  •  Pre & postoperative cases (cosmetic surgery, cancer or where lymph nodes have been removed or the lymphatic system impaired in some way).

  • Toxic build-up, oedema & fluid retention (puffy ankles, legs, eyes, bloating).

  • Scar tissue (old & new)

  • Stress, Anxiety, Tension.

LD is often called MLD - traditionally this is Manual Lymphatic Drainage using my hands, however I am also trained to use the LymphaTouch for Mechanical Lymphatic Drainage which can be especially effective over areas of swelling associated with tissues tension such as scars.

Massage

Yoga

Yoga is a holistic practice originating from ancient traditions that combines physical postures (asanas), breath control (pranayama), meditation, & ethical principles. It fosters unity of mind, body, & spirit, promoting flexibility, strength, mental clarity, & spiritual awareness. Yoga enhances physical & mental well-being while cultivating a sense of inner balance.

I originally trained in a form called 'Rocket Yoga'.  Rocket Yoga is a dynamic & invigorating yoga style that evolved from Ashtanga Yoga. Created by Larry Schultz, it combines traditional Ashtanga postures with playful variations, encouraging practitioners to explore & advance at their own pace. Known for its energetic flow, Rocket Yoga emphasizes strength, flexibility, & a sense of freedom in the practice.

Pilates

Pilates is a low-impact exercise method that focuses on strengthening the core, improving flexibility, & enhancing overall body awareness. Developed by Joseph Pilates, it incorporates precise movements, controlled breathing, & mindful concentration. Pilates exercises often involve specialized equipment or mat-based routines, emphasizing a balanced & efficient approach to physical fitness.

  • APPI (Australian Physiotherapy & Pilates Institute)qualified Class instructor matwork -

  • APPI ante & postnatal,

  • APPI Scoliosis specialist

  • Reformer/equipment training under Naomi Dineen of ND Clinical Pilates

I have explored a variety of styles or Yoga , & teaching models in Pilates, learning their benefits to be able to advise my clients in appropriate classes & modifications to help work with their rehabilitation & ongoing fitness goals.

Massage is a therapeutic practice involving the manipulation of soft tissues in the body to enhance physical & mental well-being.  Different pressures & techniques are used to create different effects in the tissues, whether that be relaxation, stimulation, neuromodulation, stretch or swelling management to name a few.  I have extensive training in various forms of massage from the deeper techniques associated with Sports Massage, to the very light used in MLD.  I am able to use this knowledge to apply effective 'hands on' therapy, whether one specific technique or a combination in order to work with the body to achieve the best results.
